We went camping as a family on Friday and Saturday and had a great time. Especially since we didn't have to do any of the cooking (it was our ward (church) campout and the ward provided dinner and breakfast).
As we started the hour-long drive to the campground, Audrey asked how long it would take to get there. We told her; she thought that was too long. Shortly after that both she and Dallin fell asleep. They woke up just as we were pulling up to the ranger's station at the campground. Here's a transcript of what she said immediately after waking up:
"See. It wasn't far at all. (pause) You guys were so wrong. (pause) It's right here by the church. (longer pause) Hey! Wait a second!"
That's as far as she got because Mel and I couldn't contain our laughter any more. The things Audrey says when she wakes up are so funny. It's like she continues whatever thought she was working on before she fell asleep.
Anyway, we had fun camping. Some of the youth in the ward let Dallin and Audrey play soccer, baseball, and jail (I don't really know what they were playing except one poor young man kept getting captured and taken to jail by Audrey and a friend of hers, both of them armed with 'lightsabers'). Once it got too dark to play everyone roasted marshmallows. Dallin just wanted to hold his in the fire forever and then every time his marshmallow fell off the stick he'd start sobbing. That could only lead to one thing: bedtime.
Audrey and Dallin both did great sleeping in the sleeping bags on the ground. Sterling didn't like it so much. He did okay for a while and then moved to sleeping on my stomach. By 4 a.m. he was done with that too. In order to keep from disturbing the other campers he and I moved into the van to finish out the night.
All in all, a pretty good experience for our first family camping trip! We would all do it again - except for maybe Sterling, but since he can't talk yet he doesn't get to vote.

Were we supposed to take a left turn or a right turn at Albuquerque? :) Looks like camping was fun...although it sounds like you had a long night! Glad the older kids did so well. You give me hope. Maybe we should try it too...next year I guess!
The ward campout is my favorite camping trip cuz I don't have to lug all the cooking gear! Emily had a rough nite too. Fun times!!!
So fun! Camping memories are the best.
I was sad to miss it but I heard it was a cold night...Carson didnt do well either.
